The story of our engagement starts with what has become a running theme in our time together...Don't start your car shopping at the Porsche dealership because you will never be able to go down from there. Better to start at the Ford dealership and work your way up.
I thought it would make sense to go window shopping for rings just so I would know what she liked. I wanted her to have what she wanted, so I took her to the nicest, most expensive jewlery store in one of the fanciest parts of DFW. Did she find one she liked? Did she ever. "Did she ever" is a good question.
After searching many more stores and looking at many more options, did she ever find something else she liked? She did not. Unfortunately, my budget was not in line with what the store wanted me to pay them. There had to be a better way.
Luckily, we found a jewler in Madison to design and make a very similar (and in the end, better quality) ring. So there it was. She knew it might be coming at some point but when and where were a mystery to her.
As we started to plan our trip to Ireland, I knew that would be the place. Unbeknownst to Jaclyn or her family (not great at the whole keeping of the secrets thing), I got the jewler working on the ring. However, as the days passed and we got closer to the start of our trip it became clear that he would not be able to finish the ring in time. It had to happen in Ireland so I needed a new idea. Smaller ring, earings, CZ? What could I do that would mean just as much? That's when it hit me. I would get her a claddagh ring. The claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring representing love, loyalty, and friendship which is used by many in Ireland as a wedding or engagement ring. Perfect.
The only question now was where on our trip to pop the question. The castle in Scotland, in Galway, basically the birthplace of the claddagh ring, in a pub in Dublin? No. No . No. The Cliffs of Moher. That would be the place.
As we drove to the cliffs it became clear that the weather was not going to cooperate with us. In fact, if not for my secret plan, our stop at the cliffs would have been very quick. It was brutally cold and the wind and rain were blowing like mad. I had to coax Jaclyn to get anywhere away from a railing as she was pretty terrified. I found a patch of grass and I dropped to one knee...The rest is history.
Our love story began in the summer of 2014 when we both were about ready to give up on online dating. We had both recently met our fair share of odd ducks and both had said we would give it one more week.
We met on Eharmony and quickly began messaging and texting eachother. As you could imagine we were both busy traveling and couldn't get our schedules to mesh to meet for the first time, but we agreed on July 24th.
I was traveling in WI for my birthday and my good friend Libby's Bachelorette Party while Will was traveling in a very unfriendly cell phone location. I would sneak in as many texts as I could during the weekend while he would travel to the top of a hill to get cell reception.
Now... this is where the story starts to get interesting... I was scheduled to fly to Nashville to meet with some customers on July 22nd (my birthday) when lovely Chicago traffic changed my next moves. I was going to have to sit in the Chicago airport all day and get to the destination late hat evening. I decided rather than sit in the airport, alone on my birthday, I would try and get home to Dallas and reschedule my trip to Nashville.
I was able to get to Dallas fairly quickly and headed to one of my favorite hotel pools in Dallas to enjoy some of the afternoon with one of my friends... we celebrated the day away, all the while trying to lure Will to the pool for the afternooon. Will wasn't quite sure what to think about being beckoned to the pool on a Tuesday afternoon! He messaged a few times that it was a work day and he had to work.
Later that day we headed to Mi Cocina, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants near my new home.... as many of you can imagine, I don't give up very easily when there is something that I want.... so... I asked if Will could join us for dinner, it was after 5pm on the work day, so he couldn't have any more excuses could he?
Will decided he would come and join us. Will walked into an interesting situation with two women who had been at the pool all day and a newly found friend we picked up at the restaurant. Will and I chatted the night away and said our good byes as the restaurant was closing that evening.
I woke up the next morning wondering if I had made a total fool of myself, but Will still answered the phone and was game to meet me on Thursday.
We met for our first "real date" at the Katy Trail Ice House. If I am honest, I was quite nervous as I wasn't 100% clear on all of the subjects we had discussed a few nights prior. We met and chatted for hours, we agreed on everything, we laughed and neither one of us seemed to want the night to end. The evening was winding down as we both had to work early the next day and Will says,"so sometimes you click and sometimes you don't..." He had this tone in his voice and I have to say that I got a horrible feeling in my stomach and thought to myself, there is something majorly wrong with my gauge of men if he tells me he isn't interested! Then he says, "and I just have to tell you that I ..... think you are awesome!" We both laughed. From that day on we hung out all of the time.
We feel blessed to have found eachother and try to live every day to the fullest. We love traveling and we don't often say no to a good time.
We can't wait for what is yet to come!
